Heavenly Voices 3 – Maria Farantouri

Maria Farantouri

(Hellas – Greece)

Maria Farantouri is universally recognized as the ideal interpreter of Mikis Theodorakis’ music. She kept Theodorakis’ music alive during the seven years of the military dictatorship when it was banned in Greece, playing an important role in the movement for the revival of Greek music.

In 1967, as soon as the military junta had taken over the power, Maria had left Greece and joined the struggle against the dictatorship by giving thousands of concerts all over the world, performing in some of world’s major concert halls such as John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, London’s Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall, the Salle Tchaikovsky in Moscow, the Berlin Opera House and the Paris Olympia. During the dictatorship and the years following it, Maria became the Greek people’s symbol of resistance and hope.

Farantouri’s expressive voice as well as the high quality of her repertoire has drawn high praise from critics and music lovers everywhere:
“Her voice is a controlled passion, a battle cry waiting for a top G to let itself go. She is unique; her voice is a gift from the Gods of Olympus”. (The Guardian)
“The Joan Baez of the Mediterranean”. (Le Monde)
“For me Greece is Maria Farantouri. This is how I imagined Goddess Hera to be: strong, pure and vigilant. I have never encountered any other artist able to give me such a strong sense of the divine”. (François Mitterrand)

Although she is best known as an interpreter of Theodorakis’ music, Maria has collaborated with a number of other Greek composers as the leading one Manos Hadzithakis.

————————-

Maria Farantouri has been referred to as the “Joan Baez of the Mediterranean” by “Le Monde”. “Her singular voice is a gift of the Olympic Gods”, wrote “The Guardian”. And François Mitterrand enthused : “For me, Maria is Greece. This is how I imagine the goddess Hera : strong, pure and vigilant. I know of no other artist who has given so much meaning to the word sublime.”  Maria Farantouri has had huge successes with her innumerable concerts all over the world and has left an indelible impression everywhere. She is considered the ideal performer of the songs and other works of the world-famous Greek composer, Mikis Theodorakis, and thus of the New Greek Song.  Born in 1947, music and singing soon became a passion for Maria. After early performances with a choir, her unique contralto voice fast turned her into a celebrated soloist. She was only 16 years old when Mikis Theodorakis discovered her, announcing : “You will become my priestess.”  Out of this prophecy developed an artistic and personal friendship which is still flourishing and which has been crowned by numerous records, concert tours and musical projects. Characteristic of these are musical settings of lyrics by major poets, both Greek (Elytis, Seferis, Kalvos, Ritsos) and international (Pablo Neruda, Federico Garcia Lorca…), which lend poetry and depth to her singing.  Forced into exile after the military coup in April 1967, she became a symbol of resistance and democracy through the hundreds of concerts she gave with songs by Mikis Theodorakis, meanwhile a prisoner of the junta.  After her return to Greece in 1974, Maria Farantouri embarked on a number of projects together with some very different artists, which extended and varied her musical repertoire. She worked, among others, with John Williams, Zülfü Livaneli, Leo Brower, Lucio Dalla and Maria del Mar Bonet. Maria Farantouri recorded many albums with songs by Manos Loizos, Eleni Karaindrou and Manos Chatzidakis, but also Bertolt Brecht. Highly valued and exemplary of her musical message is the performance of the “Mauthausen” Cycle by Theodorakis, with the Israel Symphony Orchestra under Zubin Mehta in 1991.  Fusing the worlds of (modern) classical, world music and the Greek musical tradition with her own luminous artistic universe, her unique voice and interpretation has always been one of Maria Farantouri’s outstanding qualities : her current tour is yet more evidence of the fascinating results.  Apart from well-known songs from her huge repertoire, built up over decades of artistic development, Maria Farantouri will present songs taken from her latest project. It includes a collection of authentic folksongs from Macedonia and Epirus, as well as unpublished songs by Mikis Theodorakis, inspired by this musical tradition. Revised by Henning Schmiedt and reworked into a new modern form, the songs once again build a bridge between folk art and sophisticated art songs.

To Yelasto Pedi

The first Theodorakis concert after the dictatorship in october 1974 was also filmed by german television. Here are the songs of that broadcast.

The song To Yelasto Pedi (The Jovial Boy) from the cycle The Hostage (Brendan Behan) sung by Maria Farantouri. Also known as the theme of the film Z about the murder of Lambrakis

Here the lyrics in english and greek with thanks to 913Tripolis44

THE LAUGHING BOY
Anglicized Version
It was on an August morning, all in the moring hours,
I went to take the warming air all in the month of flowers,
And there I saw a maiden and heard her mournful cry,
Oh, what will mend my broken heart, I’ve lost my Laughing Boy.
So strong, so wide, so brave he was, I’ll mourn his loss too sore
When thinking that we’ll hear the laugh or springing step no more.
Ah, curse the time, and sad the loss my heart to crucify,
Than an Irish son, with a rebel gun, shot down my Laughing Boy.
Oh, had he died by Pearse’s side, or in the G.P.O.,
Killed by an English bullet from the rifle of the foe,
Or forcibly fed while Ashe lay dead in the dungeons of Mountjoy,
I’d have cried with pride at the way he died, my own dear Laughing Boy.
My princely love, can ageless love do more than tell to you
Go raibh mile maith Agath, for all you tried to do,
For all you did and would have done, my enemies to destroy,
I’ll prize your name and guard your fame, my own dear Laughing Boy.
The Laughing Boy
by Brendan Behan
Original Version
It was on an August morning, all in the dawning hours,
I went to take the warming air, all in the Mouth of Flowers,
And there I saw a maiden, and mournful was her cry,
‘Ah what will mend my broken heart, I’ve lost my Laughing Boy.

So strong, so wild and brave he was, I’ll mourn his loss too sore,
When thinking that I’ll hear the laugh or spinging step no more.
Ah, cure the times and sad the loss my heart to crucify,
That an irish son with a rebel gun shot down my Laughing Boy.

Oh had he died by Pearse’s side or in the GPO,
Killed by an English bullet from the rifle of the foe,
Or forcibly fed with Ashe lay dead in the dungeons of Mountjoy,
I’d have cried with pride for the way he died, my own dear Laughing Boy.

My princely love, can ageless love do more than tell to you,
Go raibh maith agat for all you tried to do,
For all you did, and would have done, my enemies to destroy,
I’ll mourn your name and praise your fame, forever, my Laughing Boy.

La Ivolution -Heavenly Voices Series
